Joust is an interesting story based on a world where two countries are fighting a war using jousters on dragons. Vetch, a battered young serf, is taken by his home to serve as a dragon boy to Ari, a jouster. Ari is unique among jousters, as he raised his dragon from the egg. For that reason, his dragon does not need to be tranquilized as the others do. The other dragon boys are freeborn, so Vetch lacks friends other than Ari. He learns quite a bit from Ari, and not just how to care for dragons. You'll recognize quite a few elements from ancient Egypt in this story. The story drags a little bit at times, but overall I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's a little short on action and Vetch seems awfully knowledgeable in general for a 10 year old serf. If you read a lot of fantasy with dragons, you might find a lot of similarities with other books. That's something that really can't be helped - how many different ways can humans and dragons interact, after all, especially if caring for and riding dragons is involved. But these dragons are generally not tame... unless either drugged or raised from the egg by a single human. Don't think Pernese-style impression, think baby duck following its mother.
